Michael Jackson's Ghosts

A long-form musical short film that plays like a modern ghost story. Jackson stars as the Maestro, a mysterious, eccentric figure who lives in a grand mansion on the edge of a fearful town. When a torch-bearing mob led by a pompous mayor arrives to drive him out, the Maestro fights back not with violence but with a dazzling supernatural performance, summoning ghosts, transforming his own body, and dancing the townsfolk into submission. Jackson plays several characters, including the mayor, under heavy makeup. Running roughly forty minutes, the piece is both a horror-tinged spectacle and a pointed fable about outsiders, fear, and the power of art to answer prejudice.

The Maestro and the Mayor (multiple roles)

Directed by special-effects legend Stan Winston, the film was an effects-driven showcase written by horror author Stephen King and Mick Garris, from a story developed with Jackson. It featured elaborate prosthetics, dance set pieces, and digital effects, and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film incorporated tracks associated with the Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix era, including 2 Bad, Is It Scary, and Ghosts, tying the visuals to that period of Jackson's work.

It was received as an ambitious extension of Jackson's short-film work, admired for its effects and choreography. As a long promotional film it had limited theatrical exposure but circulated widely with the Blood on the Dance Floor era.

Stan Winston, famed for his creature and effects work, brought heavy prosthetic transformations to the piece. Jackson played multiple roles, including the antagonist mayor, echoing the outsider themes he explored elsewhere.
