John Singleton

John Singleton gave 'Remember the Time' its sweep and story. A young, acclaimed director fresh off his breakthrough feature, Singleton staged the 1992 video as a lavish tale set in ancient Egypt, with Jackson courting royalty in a pharaoh's court. The clip featured a starry cast and treated the song as a piece of short-form film rather than a simple performance video. Singleton's involvement placed a serious Black filmmaker at the center of a major Jackson project, part of a pattern in which Jackson sought out real directors for his visuals. The result was one of the most memorable videos of the Dangerous era, rich with spectacle, romance, and dance. It showed how far Jackson would go to turn a single into an event.
